TREE STORIES / Ein Prozess
Die Ausstellung ALEX KATZ /DANCING WITH REALITY 2026 in der Kunsthalle Tübingen, kuratiert von Dr. Nicole Fritz, beinhaltet einen Raum, in dem vorallem Gemälde von Bäumen von Alex Katz zu sehen sind.
„Tree Stories„entstand als Einladung zur inhaltlichen Resonanz mit diesen Bildern und einem mitgebrachten eigenen Thema der Künstlerin.
Eine Frau mit Kinderwagen durchquert die Kunsthalle. Ihre Kleidung nimmt Farben der Ausstellung auf. Sie steht vor Bildern und scheint wie beiläufig das Kind im Wagen zu schaukeln, dessen Öffnung mit einem Wickeltuch verdeckt ist, als würde des Babys Schlaf dadurch geschützt. Die Frau öffnet die Verdeckung und hebt das erste Baby heraus: Ein in Windeln gewickeltes Baumstück. Sie wiegt es sanft hin und her, betrachtet es liebevoll. Dann sieht sie sich im Raum um, geht auf Ausstellungsbesucher zu und wendet sich an eine der Personen: „Könnten Sie es kurz halten?“, fragt sie.
Sie legt dann das Baustück achtsam in die Arme einer anderen Person, sofern diese einwilligt. Dann geht sie zum Wagen zurück, holt das nächste, in Windeln gewickelte Holzstück. Insgesamt sind es drei. Der Vorgang In die Arme-Legen wiederholt sich, eins wird abgegeben, eins zurück gebracht…
Die Performance stellt Fragen nach Fürsorge, Fortbestehen von Mensch und Natur und hofft auf die Begegnung jedes Einzelnen mit sich selbst.

The exhibition ALEX KATZ / DANCING WITH REALITY 2026 at the Kunsthalle Tübingen, curated by Dr Nicole Fritz, features a room in which Alex Katz’s paintings of trees are the main focus.
‘Tree Stories’ was conceived as an invitation to engage with these images on a thematic level and to explore a theme of the artist’s own choosing.
A woman with a pram walks through the art gallery. Her clothes echo the colours of the exhibition. She stands in front of the paintings and seems to be rocking the child in the pram almost casually; the opening of the pram is covered with a swaddle, as if to protect the baby’s sleep. The woman lifts the cover and takes out the first ‘baby’: a piece of wood wrapped in nappies. She gently rocks it back and forth, gazing at it affectionately. Then she looks around the room, approaches some of the visitors and turns to one of them: ‘Could you hold this for a moment?’, she asks.
She then carefully places the piece of wood into the arms of another person, provided they agree. She then returns to the trolley and fetches the next piece of wood wrapped in nappies. There are three in total. The process of placing the piece in someone’s arms repeats itself: one is handed over, one is brought back…
The performance raises questions about care, the survival of humankind and nature, and hopes to encourage each individual to connect with their inner self.
